It’s the man or woman that makes the watch(es), and not the other way around. On this #nationaldayofservice SEND ME the DTG and TF-383 explore the nexus between a man of service and his watches (plural)! Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only U.S. national holiday that’s also a National Day of Service. In horological circles, Dr. King’s @rolex Datejust typically gets all the attention (worn by Dr. King at the 1966 March Against Fear in Mississippi). But, unsurprisingly, there’s never just one watch! Dr. King also deployed his mechanical @timex Mercury, which is on exhibit at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. In fact, there are uncorroborated and disparate reports of Dr. King’s late wife, Coretta Scott King, stating he wore his Timex in more private and quiet settings. It is assessed with moderate confidence Dr. King is wearing a Timex variant (quite possibly a Timex Marlin) while giving a 1962 speech commemorating the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation during a formal dinner he and Governor Nelson Rockefeller attended at the Park Sheraton Hotel in New York City. President Reagan signed the bill making Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday the MLK federal holiday on November 2, 1983. Just over a decade later, in 1994, President Clinton signed the King Holiday and Service Act making MLK Day a National Day of Service. As a National Day of Service, it encourages all Americans to volunteer and work on community improvement projects in honor of Dr. King’s legacy.
