Earlier this week I received my @omega Unit #seamaster Professional (AKA Unit SMP). As I was driving home from the Omega boutique, I found myself reflecting on the origins of special operations forces (SOF). Join me as we drag memory lane (and stay in your lane – hands at 10 and 2)! Modern day SOF were born out of necessity – a critical need for unconventional warfare, raids, and reconnaissance behind enemy lines during World War II (WWII). In response to this demand signal, the Coalition formalized the following: British Commandos/Special Operations Executive (SOE) in 1940 and Special Air Service/Special Boat Service (SAS/SBS) in 1941; U.S./Canadian First Special Service Force and the Office of Strategic Services (OSS)/Jedburgh Teams in 1942; and US Navy UDTs in 1943. These SOF elements evolved from a temporary, WWII-era unconventional force into a permanent, highly specialized, and joint-domain pillar of present-day national security.
